We missed a couple of weeks due to the school half-term holidays here in the UK, so I took the chance to take my daughter skiing for the first time. She loved it, but I'm not so sure I did as I came back with a broken hand due to a couple of big accidents I had on the icy slopes. I couldn't moderate my desire for speed. 😬

However, what have we got for you today? As you're reading this, I will be on my way to the Workplace Design Show, which we talked about in the last episode. But, I thought we would leave office design for now. So I compile a few items within our world of design for interiors.

Oh also we have an offer, a "Brand Your Space" starter kit, in the form of a Logo Wall. The wall graphic comes at 1.3m wide by 2.5m tall and has a separate Logo, your logo. This means you can use the background vertically or horizontally. The price is £120 including VAT, shipping and instructions.

These would be great for the background of your zoom, youtube or podcast videos. You can even shoot products against the Logo Walls or place one in your pop-up store and use it as a selfie wall for social media. There are preset backgrounds, but you can also have custom artwork if you have your own brand graphics.

Working with the pros

If you are planning to work with a commercial interior designer, here are some tips that could help you ensure a smooth and successful project:

Define your goals and requirements: Before hiring a commercial interior designer, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your project. Determine your goals, expectations, and requirements, and communicate them clearly to your designer.

Set a realistic budget: Be clear about your budget upfront if you only have £10,000  communicate it to your designer so they do not design to a £100,000 budget. A good designer will work with you to maximize your budget and find the best solutions that meet your needs.

Establish a clear scope of work: Define your areas of priority, including timelines and deadlines, deliverables, and milestones, in writing. This will help you manage expectations and avoid misunderstandings.

Communicate openly and frequently: Regular communication is essential for the success of any project. Make sure to keep in touch with your designer and provide feedback and input throughout the project.

Find and Hire a Designer you can Trust: Your designer has experience and expertise in creating functional and aesthetic spaces. Be open to their suggestions and trust their judgment, but also make sure to voice any concerns or questions you may have.

Monitor the progress: Regularly monitor the progress of the project and ensure it aligns with the agreed-upon scope of work, timeline, and budget.

By respecting your design collaborator and working with the following tips, you can work effectively with your commercial interior designer and achieve the best possible results for your project, in your budget.

How Much Does it Cost to Brand Office Walls?

Wall of Sound

Acoustic panels for walls are a popular solution for reducing noise levels in rooms and improving the sound quality. Here are some tips to consider when choosing and installing acoustic panels.

Using acoustic panels to improve sound quality is a common practice in commercial and public spaces, such as offices, conference rooms, and auditoriums. However, acoustic panels can often look plain and utilitarian, which can be a drawback in more design-focused settings.

By collaborating with Wall of Art, Abstracta has managed to create acoustic panels that are also visually appealing. The framed art prints not only enhance the aesthetics of a room but also absorb sound, which is a win-win situation. It's also a clever way to integrate art into functional spaces, making them more engaging and enjoyable.

Swiss brand Impact Acoustic is also taking a sustainable approach to its Archisonic collection of sound-absorbing material by using recycled plastic bottles. By repurposing waste materials, the brand is reducing its environmental impact while also creating a functional and attractive product.

The Archisonic collection is a good example of how sustainable design can be combined with functional requirements to create innovative solutions. Sound absorption is a critical aspect of creating comfortable and productive interior spaces, and using recycled materials to achieve this is a smart and responsible choice.

Wood Upp's Class A sound absorption panels are becoming increasingly popular in both commercial spaces due to their sound-reducing properties and attractive aesthetics. Sound reduction is essential for creating comfortable and productive interior spaces, and using acoustic panels is an effective way to achieve this.

Wood Upp is also committed to environmental sustainability throughout its production process. Using sustainable or recycled materials is an important step towards reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing.

Overall, acoustic panels can be an effective solution for reducing noise levels in a room and improving sound quality. Consider the above products when choosing and installing acoustic panels for your walls. 🤫

Spaces for working are changing, and so are spaces for buying.

Store design is currently a hot topic in commercial design as many retail stores are closing due to the convenience of online shopping. Brands are having to invent new ways to bring customers back to their physical stores.

Apparel stores have taken on this mission with their hybrid design. This store concept combines traditional brick-and-mortar stores with online shopping experiences, creating a seamless and convenient shopping experience while promoting physical interaction with garments and shoes.

The goal of this store design is to offer customers the best of both worlds: the tactile experience of shopping in-person and convenience. Many brands are also using this shopping experience to create immersive spaces that envelop the clients into the brand's world.

We touched on the Addidas pop-up stores in the last episode (see below if you missed it)

While many traditional businesses have disappeared from the high street and moved online, one online store has recently moved to the high street after their online success. That brand is Gymshark, a brand set up from a home-based business with a Shopify store. Gymshark was valued at over £1 billion in 2020. And in October 2022, they opened their first permanent store on Regent Street, London.

Gymshark has said that the 'The Hub' section of the store (below) will be a space where its community can host podcasts, panels, workshops, screenings, live streaming, Sunday Brunch Clubs, and more. And more retailers are doing similarly by making space for 'non-shopping' experiences in a way of expanding the brand into everyday life.

Here is a great read on how Nike are designing their spaces, featured in Wallpaper mag.

Lighting

Lighting design is an essential aspect of interior design. Proper lighting can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space, make it more functional, and even affect our moods and emotions. Here are some tips for lighting design in interiors:

  • Understand the three primary types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent

  • Plan lighting early in the design process

  • Create layers of light using a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting

  • Consider the natural light in the space

  • Choose appropriate fixtures that complement the space's overall design

  • Use energy-efficient lighting, such as LED and CFL bulbs

  • Install dimmer switches for more control over the brightness of the lighting

In summary, proper lighting design is crucial in interior design. A combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting can create depth and interest while enhancing the functionality of the space. Properly placed fixtures, natural light, and energy-efficient lighting can also reduce costs and minimize environmental impact.
